With age, we develop wrinkles on our face making us look older and more tired than we actually are. Our skin must withstand the effects of sun damage and toxins as we age. Ageing is accompanied by the appearance of two types of wrinkles: dynamic and static.
Dynamic wrinkles are caused by muscle over-activity and repeated muscular contractions. Static wrinkles are associated with loss of volume, semi-circular lines, marking the boundary of the cheek and the mouth area, come into this category.
Muscle contractions are caused by the release of acetylcholine from the nerve endings. BOTOX® is a type A botulinum toxin that temporarily blocks the release of acetylcholine. The muscle is then relaxed and the wrinkle is reduced.
